Easy Paella Recipe – how to make paella (kid-friendly!)

Kid Friendly Paella 

Everyone loves this easy paella recipe (especially the kids!) it’s very versatile allowing you to cook an easy paella with basmati rice using whatever ingredients you prefer!.

You choose whether you want a seafood paella, meat paella or vegan paella – see my tip below!

My one-pot cheats paella is great to make for a family dinner! This is a great recipe to prepare the ingredients for the kids so they can spend their time getting bits ready and stirring the frying pan – you’ll want to be on hand to supervise them while cooking.

You choose the main ingredient to make it a:

  • Shellfish Paella (e.g prawns or bag frozen mixed seafood) or
  • Meat Paella (diced chicken breast, I’ll be using sliced pork belly) or
  • Vegetarian Paella (broccoli/cauliflower florets)

SERVES 4 

Serving Suggestion:

  • This one is great on it’s own!

What you need:

  • Large frying pan with lid or foil to cover if you don’t have a lid
  • Chopping board

Ingredients:

  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, sliced
  • Splash olive oil
  • 1 mug of basmati rice
  • 1 stock cube (chicken or veg)
  • 3 tbsp tomato puree
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas or any other diced veg
  • 500g main ingredient – (see note above; seafood or vegetarian or meat paella)
  • Optional – 1 tbsp smoked paprika (it really needs this or but a pre-made seasoning mix)
  • Optional – Pinch turmeric
  • Optional – handful chopped fresh herbs (parsley or coriander)

Easy paella recipe; a simple paella inspired recipe using basmati rice and cooked in a frying pan - perfect to get the kids cooking or midweek meal!

Ingredients
  • 500g main ingredient – (see tip)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, sliced
  • Splash olive oil
  • 1 mug of basmati rice
  • 1 stock cube (chicken or veg)
  • 3 tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 cup frozen peas (or any other)
  • 2 tbsp smoked paprika
  • Handful fresh parsley, chopped Lemon wedges for garnish
Directions
  • Step 1 Fry the onions and garlic in a hot frying pan with a splash of olive oil for a couple of minutes then add the meat (if using, if using fish or veg – save this for later) and fry till slightly coloured. Add the rice and fry for another minute, then add all the rest of the ingredients and mix together in the pan, including the stock cube.
  • Step 2 Now pour in 2 mugs (or basically whatever you used to measure the rice – 2 of those) of hot water into the pan. Carefully combine everything.
  • Step 3 If using fish or vegetables instead of meat
  • Step 4 add these now.
  • Step 5 Cover the pan and leave on a low heat so it is just bubbling for about 10-12 minutes or until all the water is absorbed. Remove from the heat and leave to rest for 5 minutes. Serve with a scattering of fresh herbs and squeeze of lemon!
