I’ve been specific in saying this is how to cook Basmati rice as brown rice takes a lot longer, as does most non-white rice and long grain I find is easier to cook and drain.
Basmati on the other hand is my friend. Basmati is fluffy and lovely. Basmati knows what it wants and is always consistent.
And it’s that consistency that makes it fool-proof. Cooking Basmati rice is all about the ratio; 2 water : 1 rice.
Whatever volume of rice you are using simply add double the quantity in water and you are good to go! Quite a few people rinse their rice first; but in the mayhem of feeding children mid-week I don’t bother..
A few tips on cooking rice:
Rule 1. Don’t stir the rice – you’ll just wind it up 🙂
Rule 2. Don’t take the lid off during cooking.
Rule 3. Keep it on the lowest setting possible.
How to cook Basmati rice – Serves 4 – Ingredients:
1 tbl oil
Pinch salt
1 cup Basmati Rice
2 cups hot water
How to Cook Basmati Rice – Method:
- In a warm saucepan add a dash of oil and then stir in the rice until fully coated.
- Add hot water and pinch of salt and bring to the boil.
- Immediately cover the saucepan and turn the stove down to the lowest setting and cook for 10 minutes.
- Remove from the heat and use a fork to fluff the rice.
