Soda Bread Recipe – how to make soda bread

Making soda bread is one of my favourite breads to make at home.

Mainly because I don’t have the patience (and very rarely the foresight) to make bread and have time for proofing. This soda bread recipe isn’t sexy, new or difficult – but it always delivers great results, tastes fabulous and after about 10 minutes of prep you’ve got a fresh hot baked loaf of soda bread!

Soda Bread Recipe

Soda Bread Ingredients:

Pre-heated oven 200F (fan oven)

  • 500g plain flour
  • 400ml milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda (or baking powder works)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • Handful of oats

Soda Bread Recipe Method:

  • Mix together the dry ingredients; flour, most of the oats (save a little for the top) salt, bicarb (or baking powder) in a large mixing bowl.
  • In a separate jug mix together the milk, honey, vinegar or lemon juice (it will curdle a little which is what you want).
  • Now combine the two together, slowly incorporating the wet into the dry until you have a fairly sticky dough. Tip out onto a floured work surface and kneed a little until it comes together to form a dough.
  • Tip onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper, cut a cross over the top (pretty much all the way through), sprinkle the remaining oats over the top and bake in a pre-heated oven 200FAN for 40 minutes.
  • Remove and let cool (or just rip it open, slather in butter and rejoice!) 🙂
