Roasting Chestnuts – How to roast chestnuts in an oven

Roasting Chestnuts are incredibly easy to do and as much as I love proper roasted-over-hot-coals-chestnuts, roasting chestnuts at home in your oven is super easy (and convenient).

Roasted chestnuts make the perfect Halloween snack in the build up to the festive season.

Whenever I walk past a stall holder roasting chestnuts over hot coal, that smell instantly sends me reaching for a tacky Christmas jumper and glass of mulled wine. It’s just one of those smells that’s ingrained in my mind of Autumn and moving into winter months…

Some of our friends recently went on the usual family day out, walking through the local park and stumbled across a bunch of chestnuts and bless them, kicked into full foraging mode and got me a whopping big bag of sweet chestnuts.

As soon I had them in my hands I couldn’t wait to start roasting them; it’s one of lifes humble pleasures; slowly grazing over a tray of roasted chestnuts. In fact we don’t even move them, they come out of the oven, sit on the kitchen worktop and by the next day there is just a pile of shell casings left..

Needless to say – that’s exactly what I did! And now I’m going to share it with you.

I’m making roasted chestnuts sound like some incredible secret – it’s not. Just bung them in the oven for half hour. But if you want to be specific… here’s how I actually roasted my chestnuts…

Quick reminder – don’t confuse sweet chestnuts with conkers or horse chestnuts!

Horse chestnuts or Conkers are smooth and round and are NOT edible. The edible sweet chestnuts have a definite ‘tuft’ or point.
