When I’m feeling a little naughty and want to roll my sleeves up and eat something messy, I always tend to lean towards any type of meat I can slow cook, has a bone in it and goes great slathered with an easy homemade BBQ sauce.

I think everyone should have a homemade barbecue sauce recipe in their repertoire. This particular concoction is my go-to version because it’s incredibly easy to make and damn tasty! Plus the really good thing is no matter what you are cooking on the BBQ; everything tastes better with some barbecue sauce.

The litmus test of a good BBQ for me, is one that touches upon a childlike awe of eating something you are categorically allowed to make a mess with.

There are a ton of BBQ sauce recipes out there and I’ve made a lot. I mean A LOT. Some that you cook, others that you don’t. And if the truth be told; this is the one I always go to. With the added bonus that since there is no cooking involved you can let the kids loose on making it for you (yes, it’s that easy even my children can make this BBQ sauce!).

Like with most of my quick, smash-and-grab sauces or dressings, a jar is almost mandatory. It makes the whole thing really easy to mix and store in one go.

Plus I like to put little printer labels on them and write my kids names and ‘BBQ sauce’ – they get a kick out of it and that’s an easy parenting win for me!

Boom! Who’s the best dad in the world who just wrote your name on a jar?! That’s right!!

I’m sure when they’re older than 4 that trick might not be as well received…anyway, time to get messy…

Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe – Ingredients:

6 tbl ketchup

2 tbl honey

1 tbl dark soy (must be dark not light)

1 tbl malt vinegar (or cider vinegar)

1/2 tbl chilli flakes (optional)

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp ground coriander

2 tsp smoked paprika

1 tbl dried oregano

Pinch of salt & pepper

BBQ Sauce Method:

Place all the ingredients into a jar and give it a good shake!

You really need to taste this for the right balance of sweet (honey), sharp (vinegar), savoury (soy), smokiness (paprika). If you can’t find dark soy sauce maybe try half light soy sauce and half Worcestershire sauce. But ideally dark soy which looks black is best.

You can also freestyle this a bit by adding any other ingredients you fancy! Sometimes I add some crushed garlic or a couple of pinches of Chinese five spice if I want a more Chinese flavouring. But overall the recipe above works great!

Goes well slathered on BBQ ribs!
